Distance, transfer, reef and privacy: the four criteria that really matter.
Choosing an island in the Maldives first means choosing how to get there. A 35-minute seaplane is not a 20-minute boat transfer.
The transfer
Seaplanes fly in daylight only: if your flight lands in the evening, you need a night in Malé. Check before booking.
The reef
Proximity of the reef shapes the snorkelling. Ask whether the house reef can be reached from the beach.
Privacy
The number of rooms tells you more than any adjective: a 40-villa resort is a different experience from a 150-room one.
